Rebuilding from the Inside Out: A Survivor’s Journey

Hello, it’s Terri from She Beasts!

We’re thrilled to be back with another blog post, and this time we’re diving into the transformative journey of rebuilding and healing from the inside out after trauma. Having been part of She Beasts for almost two years, I want to share my personal story and reflect on mental health, resilience, and the strength of trauma survivors.

A Journey Through Trauma

Dealing with traumatic events, especially at a young age, can be incredibly overwhelming. For years, I battled my mental health while surrounded by toxic environments and people. I faced dark times, including multiple suicide attempts and self-harm, but today, I stand stronger than ever.

I am living proof that it's possible to overcome challenges such as:

  • Trauma
  • Struggling with food
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • EUPD (Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder)

It hasn’t been easy, but my journey proves that healing and transformation are achievable.

Discovering She Beasts

In February 2021, I was introduced to She Beasts through a referral from Birmingham & Solihull Women's Aid (BSWA). The mission of She Beasts—focusing on empowering marginalized communities—immediately resonated with me. Since then, I’ve experienced a life-changing journey, not just mentally and physically but also financially.

Along the way, I’ve faced significant challenges: verbal, emotional, and mental abuse. It’s essential to understand that domestic abuse isn’t limited to physical violence—it can manifest in many forms.

After confiding in my GP, I was referred to IRIS, who emphasized the risks my situation posed to my daughter’s well-being. I knew I had to make a change, so I made the difficult decision to leave.

The path wasn’t smooth. Even after leaving, I continued to endure controlling behaviors, especially around child contact. Navigating an 18-month family court process was grueling, but I stayed strong and remained committed to speaking my truth.

My driving force was my daughter. I wanted her to be proud of me and to see her mother as someone strong and resilient.

A Transformative Partnership

During this journey, I met Sadie, the founder of She Beasts. Her passion and vision left me in awe. At that time, I struggled with self-confidence, responding with a cautious “yes” to her invitation to join. Little did I know how transformative that “yes” would become.

Fast forward to today, and I’m not just surviving—I’m thriving. I’m on track to complete my educational qualifications through She Beasts by January 2024 (possibly even sooner since I’m ahead!).

The She Beasts Methodology

The foundation of She Beasts is healing through strength. Our program provides survivors with tools to rebuild their lives and emerge stronger. We focus on three core pillars:

  1. Fitness – Building physical strength to empower mental resilience.
  2. Nutrition – Nurturing the body to support healing.
  3. Mindset – Developing self-compassion, resilience, and personal growth.

Our team of coaches and members are women who’ve walked similar paths. Together, we guide and empower others to embrace their inner strength and rewrite their life stories.

A Message to Survivors

Sometimes, we doubt our own worth, but everyone has incredible potential. With the right support, tools, and community, it’s possible to overcome even the darkest times. Opportunities like She Beasts don’t come often—when they do, seize them.

Let this be a reminder: no matter how insurmountable the obstacles may seem, you can and will succeed. You’re stronger than you think, and together, we’ll keep building a brighter future.

With love,
Terri
